Art Fair Season 4 coming this spring to bring Kolkata what it stands for, Art beyond your imagination
Art Fair as the name suggest, is all about art, artists and appreciators.Well it doesn't end there. As the trend is, music, poetry, theater, and everything that inspires artists has always been initiated during the fair and then the five days of art fair becomes an extravaganza, an event to be remembered, an art space to get inspired from and hold on to the feeling of existing in an entire new world...the world of an artist.
Curator Sufia Khatoon, is the creative mine behind this entire thing. She believes that an event like this can do wonders in the art circle. Which includes artists creating for art sake and its an initiative to bring in art lovers, those who really understand art and hold it dear to themselves.
Sufia had started out as an artist two years ago and she realized what was truly happening in the art circle from the outside. To know what really makes an artist reach to people" 'famous' or most sort for she began her research. On a closer look it appeared that more or less art had been turned into like any other product that is available in the market, that in a deeper level none understood art as it is supposed to be.Artists too often get carried away in the struggle to earn a livelihood and turning their creations into commercialized products. So what was the answer? A place where artists would get that focus and they could without any inhibitions produce their most ambitions works which would be experimental and inspirational as well.Art Fair would be a place where artists would get that appreciation that they deserve and that love.
Sufia picks up various artists, photographers and crafters from everywhere thus giving them a platform like Art Fair.Already in its fourth season, art fair has so much in for everyone....and everyone is getting excited as the summers approaches.
Vasu's Agarwal's work as Sufia says is all dreamy and beautiful.
Her favorite is The milky Way, she says" One can constantly look in his photographs, like they are standing there.I loved the milky way and wished as a spectator I was there.I feel Vasu has the right mind set and we are really happy to have him with us.His works are vibrant and it would really transport you to your soulful side."
In today's edition, we would like to meet Vasu Agarwal, a talented young boy from Dehradun who moved in to Kolkata in search of that quest. His unique photographic skills got him selected in Art Fair and we are really amazed with what we have seen.
Lets here what he had to say when Sufia Khatoon, the curator of Art Fair had a one to one interaction with him
Vasu: I grew up in Delhi all my life, which is a very fast paced city. Moving to Dehradun to study engineering at 18 brought about a different vibe, a sense of calm in the openness of the hills. Out there, the definition of a weekend for me was taking a hike in the hills around college. I was also starting to get influenced by people traveling across the world. It felt like a dream. This dream of travel is what fuels my desire to produce interesting photos today. I don't want to be remembered as a person who captured the literal look of a place. I try to catch the abstract thought that goes behind the feeling of a place, or a work of art. I want to create something that people want to look at twice. The biggest challenge is to make a photograph evoke a sense of emotion.
Sufia: Tell us something about your passion for photography? We see a lot of nature in your works, how can you describe your attachment to nature?
Vasu: Photography somehow happened while I was studying engineering in Dehradun. Being in the laps of nature for 4 years has had a clear influence. The way colors come out after the rain washes the dust, the way night sky makes you feel small under the huge blanket of stars. It is a feeling of contentment. There are a thousand photographers oozing out of the cracks everyday. The sole purpose of my work is to create something that evokes a sense of emotion, create something interesting. I like to believe that I am on a rage against the boring.
Sufia: Could you tell us about some basics of good photography Vasu since I am sure some photographers are out there with a DSLR not knowing what to do?
Vasu: Without going into the technical part I will say it is all about understanding the nature of light. The camera will help you in setting the correct exposure. Understanding composition helps a great deal in photograph aesthetics. One thing people do not worry about before clicking is the focus. Sometimes working around the focus points brings out a wow factor. It’s easy, really, just experiment with light, depth of field and do what your heart tells you.
Sufia: What role does a camera play in photography? Can you tell us about the different use of lenses so that it helps new photographers?
Vasu: Making great photographs never require a high end camera. I used a normal digicam for about a year before moving over to an entry level dslr. The emotion in a photograph is what makes a photograph great, not the quality of the pixel. It is important to work with a small camera to understand the limitations and truly appreciate the power of a dslr. I’ll say invest in thought rather than photography gear. For landscapes, do not underestimate your 18-55mm kit lens. Personally, I love using my 35mm. Now it’s the ONLY lens I use now. I don’t feel the need for a new lens anymore.
Sufia: What you usually like to photograph? your idol and what you like about their works?
Vasu: Every photo has a story. Most of my photos are landscapes but I am not limited by that genre. I will photograph a scene if I feel that it has a feeling to convey. That is why I work with concepts and expression of thought. I do not have an idol as such. There are so many people producing such a high quality photographic content across the world. I pick up inspirations from everywhere.
Sufia: It’s your first time with Art Fair. What are your expectations? You have exhibited before so tell us generally the response of people to photography?
Vasu: More than displaying my work, I want to connect with like-minded photographers and maybe collaborate on a new project. Try out something that I have not done before. I expect a good audience too. In exhibitions, viewers are looking for fresh content. They want to look at something that makes them go wow! Photography exhibitions are usually very upbeat. Sometimes people imagine themselves in the photograph.
Sufia: Tell us about your concepts? What subjects you like to work with? which one is your best work so far and why?
Vasu: I consider the ‘Maachis’ photo-series to be one of the best works I have produced. I used matchsticks to create scenes on a table top and lighted up the scene using table lamps. I have experimented with Panorama techniques and long shutter photography. Light paining using fire is something that is really fun to do and results are amazing. In every concept, I have tried to include a human connect.
Well, we got to know so much about Vasu and how to go about photography.
